But for Stephen Grand, the proud papa, his orangutan-like bot child has demonstrated just enough intelligence for him to hope he'll see it through nursery school.

A self-proclaimed "digital god" and the author of Creation: Life and How to Make It, Grand has been called Britain's most intelligent man as well as one of the 18 scientists most likely to revolutionize our lives during the 21st century. For the past three years, he has been working on Lucy, a robot child that Grand hopes will eventually develop a mind of its own.
