The Turing Test and its Role in Modern Thought [Part 2]

In the first part of this study I examined the Turing Test (henceforth simply the “Test”) directly, closely analysing key passages of the paper in which it was presented, and noting how the Test has been used by the AI community. In this second part, I will examine what may be called the offspring of the Test: first, what is generally regarded as the strongest attack on it, Searle’s Chinese Room thought experiment, and second, the most determined effort yet made to perform it, the Loebner Prize Competition. At the end, I offer some general conclusions that seem to be warranted by the study as a whole.

1. Turing Test - The Turing test, developed by Alan Turing in 1950, is a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.

2. Loebner Prize - The Loebner Prize is an annual competition in artificial intelligence that awards prizes to the computer programs considered by the judges to be the most human-like.
